2. Although First Ladies carry no official duties and receive no salary, they have held a highly visible position in American government. Instead of developing personal careers, First Ladies organize and attend official ceremonies either along with, or in place of, the president. Over the centuries, the role of the first lady has evolved: from a political celebrity to a political activist, and even a political interloper.
Shortly after President Wilson suffered a stroke, Edith Wilson unofficially took over most of the duties of the Presidency until the end of her husband’s term. Earlier, during World War I, Mrs. Wilson had had sheep brought onto the White House lawn to eat the grass. The sheep not only kept the lawn mowed but also provided wool for an auction sponsored by the First Lady. Almost $100,000 was raised for the Red Cross.
Dolley Madison popularized the first ladyship by engaging in efforts to assist orphans and women. Besides, she saw to it that a magnificent painting of George Washington was not destroyed during the War of 1812. As the British marched toward Washington D.C., she remained behind to rescue the painting, even after the guards left. Dolley Madison’s actions were the model for nearly every first lady until Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1930s.
Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, played a pivotal role through her husband’s tenure in office, especially after he was plagued by a paralytic illness. After his death, she became famous for her humanitarian work in the United Nations. She helped thousands of needy people around the world to live a better life.
One of the famous First Ladies is Hillary Clinton. As the First Lady, Hillary Clinton made efforts to reform the healthcare system in the U.S. In 2001, she was elected a U.S. Senator, which marked the first time a former American First Lady had held public office. As Secretary of State in the Obama administration, she is the first former First Lady to serve in a president’s cabinet.
