3. Since she was a small girl, Whitney had always been considered a bit timid and reserved. Besides, she never really wanted to be the center of attention. She felt lonely all the time and wanted to have someone to share her secrets and laughs with. Much to her disappointment, however, she couldn’t find companionship throughout high school.
When it was time to go to college, Whitney was quite anxious and nervous because she had to live 300 miles away from home and share a room with a stranger. That is, there wouldn’t be a single person she knew. She had no idea how she was going to make friends in this entirely new environment.
During the first week of semester, something happened that changed Whitney’s life forever. In her English composition class, she was asked to share a little about herself. She told everyone where she came from and all the other ordinary details students share in such situations. The final question for each student to answer was, “What’s your goal for this class?” Most of the students said they would like to get good grades, pass the course, or something like that. For some reason, Whitney said something completely different from her classmates. She said her goal was to make just one good friend.
While most of the students sat in silence, one student came up to Whitney and reached out her hand and introduced herself. She told Whitney that her name was Keira and asked her if they could be friends. All eyes focused on Whitney and the hand that had been extended to her. Whitney smiled and stretched her hand out, and a friendship that would stand the test of time was formed. That day Whitney learned the power of asking for what she wanted and taking action.
