1. Taiwan, also named Formosa, is an island of about 36,000 square kilometers situated in the subtropical zone of the western Pacific Ocean, and located off the southeastern coast of mainland China. It is blessed with a moderate climate and fertile flat lands which are good for farming. Besides, Taiwan is known for its breathtaking scenery, which attracts a lot of tourists. With the island’s rapid economic development, numerous manufacturing and high-tech companies have been set up over the past few decades. This has made Taiwan prosperous and brought a lot of people to this mountainous island, but at the same time it has led to problems with the environment.
The Penghu Islands are an archipelago off the southwestern coast of Taiwan in the Taiwan Strait. They cover an area of 141 square kilometers and consist of nearly 100 small islands, many of which are famous for their pure white-sand beaches. The broad beaches and beautiful underwater scenery are the major attractions of the Penghu Islands.
Of the numerous islands, only 20 are inhabited. The uninhabited islands of Penghu have been kept intact, free from human intervention. The primitive conditions on these islands, their unique basalt rock formations and rich ecology will pleasantly surprise visitors. The islands have been designated as official nature preserves, for they are endowed with remarkable and rare resources. For instance, Gupo
(Great Aunt) Island, the largest uninhabited island in the North Sea area, is a center for seaweed production. Like Gupo Island, Baisha (White Sand) Island is uninhabited and has also preserved its primitive, unspoiled character. The island features well-developed columnar basalt formations, which are particularly spectacular on the southern coastline. This is also one of the best spots for bird watching in the Penghu Islands. In addition, the island’s pillar-shaped rock formations are like Mother Nature’s own sculptures.
Like gifts from God, the yellow flowers that bloom among the basalt rock cracks and the beautiful songs of little singing birds on the meadows make the Penghu Islands seem a true paradise. Far from the crowded, bustling cities on Taiwan, these isles are like pearls scattered in the blue sea.
