1. Nothing can define a metropolis better than skyscrapers. Almost every big city has its own representative skyscraper. We find the Empire State Building in New York, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai. These high-rise steel buildings shape the skylines of the cities; some of them even act as the most significant landmarks. These skyscrapers are majestic, but no one now thinks of the first skyscraper – the Home Insurance Building, just around 42 meters high. In terms of today’s architectural technology, the Home Insurance Building was just an ordinary 10-story structure. The concept of a multi-story metal building, however, frightened many people back in the nineteenth century. Built in Chicago in 1885, the Home Insurance Building was the brainchild of American architect William LeBaron Jenney. Having discovered that thin pieces of steel could support a tall building as well as stone walls could, Jenney designed a steel skeleton for the Home Insurance Building, which gave the structure fewer pillars and more floor space, fewer brick walls and more glass windows. That made the building even more distinctive. Besides its steel skeleton, the Home Insurance Building was novel to the people of its time because it weighed only one-third as much as a building made of stone would. It’s said that both citizens and officials were so concerned that its construction was once suspended for an inspection. Demolished in 1931, the Home Insurance Building looks quite ordinary in its photos but it’s the very prototype of our modern skyscrapers.
