1. The most famous collection of nursery rhymes is the one called “Mother Goose,” a name that is still given to all collections of nursery rhymes in English-speaking nations. However, who is “Mother Goose”? In fact, no real writer has been identified with this name. Although there are plenty of reports or stories that try to identify her, there are still no certain answers. The most popular version may be the one that used to circulate in Boston and has nowadays become familiar to all tourists to the city. According to Eleanor Early, aBostontravel and history writer of the 1930s and 1940s, the original Mother Goose was a real country woman who moved to Boston in the 1660s. Her reported second husband was Isaac Goose, and she was accordingly named Elizabeth Foster Goose or Mary Goose. After Isaac died, Mary moved in with her eldest daughter, who had married Thomas Fleet, a publisher living on Pudding Lane in Boston. According to Early’s study, “Mother Goose” had the habit of making up and singing ditties all day to her grandchildren; these ditties were so pleasant to the ear that other children in the neighborhood also crowded around to hear them. Thanks to Mary’s son-in-law’s particular career background as a publisher, these lovely songs were collected in a systematic way and finally published under the title “Mother Goose.”
