1. For most modern people, cars play an indispensable part of everyday life. However, the exhaust fumes produced by vehicles pose a threat to the environment. In fact, carbon dioxide emissions are one of the factors which cause global warming. For this reason, many governments have made the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions a top priority. For example, people are encouraged to carpool instead of driving their own cars. There is also a special day set aside as World Car-Free Day to raise awareness of other transportation options.
World Car-Free Day, which was established in 2000, is an annual celebration designed to take the heat off the planet. It originated in Europe and now has become a worldwide event since the campaign, European Mobility Week, was launched in 2002. Every Sept. 22, people everywhere are encouraged to use an alternative means of getting around─walking, riding bicycles, or taking public transportation. People organize activities of all types to show the world that it isn’t necessary to drive. It also reminds governments that they should make changes to benefit those who don’t drive and offer green or low-emission transportation.
For the past few decades, environmentally conscious people have raised the issue of environmental disaster on a scale that previous generations could barely have imagined. For example, scientists claim that, within 20 years, global warming will leave the Arctic Ocean ice-free during the summer, consequently raising sea levels and harming wildlife, such as seals and polar bears. The environmental consequences of such changes are potentially catastrophic, even threatening the future viability of civilization on the planet. Therefore, World Car-Free Day should not be a one-day effort only, but a showcase for cities to eliminate the noise and pollution of automobiles.
