1. When we want to communicate something to another person face to face, we rely on our spoken language. However, it may surprise you to learn that, according to research, over half of all human communication is done not through words but rather through body language.
Body language may include expressions or gestures that indicate whether a person is angry, happy, sad, bored, excited, or experiencing any other emotion in the spectrum. It can clarify what people truly mean when they say something, especially if they are being sarcastic or showing some form of derision. For example, a person who rolls his eyes when he says something that sounds positive may not be sincere in his remarks.
Certain people rely on body language in their work. Police officers, for instance, use it when they interview people suspected of committing crimes. Experienced detectives who have interrogated hundreds of suspects can often tell when a person is lying. They do this not by listening to the person but by watching him. The things that a person does with his eyes or hands when he answers a question, or the way in which he sits in his chair, can reveal much more than simply the words that come out of his mouth.
Body language is important in communication, so when you are listening to people, you should also observe their body language closely.
